UiTM - Guides on Laboratory Ethics and Laboratory Report

Laboratory ethics
  1. Wear covered shoes; sandals are not allowed.
  2. Always wear lab coat, hijab tucked in, and hair is tied into pony.
  3. Always wear gloves while handling chemicals - certain chemicals can cause you to suffer from eczema upon contact.
  4. Do not play around in the lab. Lab is not a place for you to giggle and etc. Lab is focused on work, and after done with your work and filling the data, you may leave the lab earlier than anyone else.
  5. You will sign declaration about laboratory rules, usually done during the first lab or during lab briefing.
  6. Please make jotter before the lab. Understands the procedure, and advisable to illustrate the procedure in the jotter (draw)
  7.  Multitask. You are usually will be grouped, so according to the procedure, each one of you could take a role to make the process become easier. Your efficiency will affect the peer review (5% of the grade) later.
  8. Please sign your attendance.
  9. Please make sure your bench work is clean and all the apparatus used are put in the drying rack or drying cabinet; all the chemicals are discarded into its own tank; before leaving the lab.
Laboratory report
  1. Cover page includes UiTM logo, Faculty, Subject name, Experiment number and title, your name, student ID, group / class, lecturer's name and submission date. Cover page example are as follows:

  2. The laboratory report should be written in following format:
    - A4 size
    - Times New Roman, 12, Justified; or, Arial, 11, Justified

  3. Unless stated otherwise, the lab report should include:

    • Introduction
      • In introduction, you should talk about the keywords of your experiment. As example, if your experiment is related to blood, then you should talk about type of blood, composition of blood, analysis of blood and etc.
    • Objectives
    • Hypothesis (Degree student are usually not required to write hypothesis)
    • Materials, reagent, chemicals, apparatus and instrument
    • Method / Procedure
      • Should be written in past tense.
      • Written in paragraphs.
    • Results / Data
    • Discussion
      • Discussion is based on the result you obtained. As an example, if the result shown is blood type A, the discussion shall be written as following:

The result from the table shows that the blood type is A. This is due to the agglomeration with anti-A antibody, and the agglomeration reaction only will occur with blood type A as the blood type A contains antigen A that will reacts with anti-A antibody.
      • If the results obtained are not as expected, it shall be discussed why your results are like that. As an example:

The results that should be obtained is B-type, as the sample used is collected from blood type B. The error in the results obtained may be due to the expiration of the serum used in this experiment, or may due to the prolonged exposure of the blood to the outside system that caused degradation, hence giving an inaccurate result.
      • Also, at the end of the discussion, you should include the recommendations to improve your result obtained and also precautions that you should take during the experiment to avoid accident and also minimizing the error for your result.
    • Conclusion
      • Conclusion should answer the objective. Example, if the objective is to determine the blood type, and the result blood type is A, the conclusion shall be written as following:

Throughout this experiment, the blood analysis was done through (method), and the result shown that the blood type is A, hence, achieving the first objective, which is to determine the blood type.
